cornea

cornea refractive surgery lasik

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped front surface of the eye that plays a crucial role in focusing light and protecting the inner eye structures. Its clarity and curvature are essential for maintaining clear vision. Understanding the importance of the cornea and its role in eye health is essential for overall visual well-being.

Importance of the Cornea

The cornea plays a vital role in vision by refracting light as it enters the eye. It focuses light onto the lens and then onto the retina, enabling us to see clearly. Any abnormalities in the cornea's curvature or clarity can lead to vision problems.

Common Corneal Conditions:

  1. Corneal Abrasion: A scratch on the cornea's surface, causing pain and discomfort.
  2. Keratoconus: The cornea thins and bulges, causing distorted vision and astigmatism.
  3. Corneal Dystrophies: Inherited conditions causing clouding or structural changes in the cornea.
  4. Corneal Ulcers: Open sores on the cornea often caused by infections or injuries.
  5. Corneal Edema: Swelling due to fluid accumulation, causing blurred vision.

Corneal Transplantation and Treatment:Severe corneal conditions might require transplantation to restore clear vision. The following procedures exist:

  1. Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP): Full-thickness corneal transplant to replace the entire cornea.
  2. Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) and Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK): Partial-thickness transplants for endothelial disorders.
